Classical Studies Quiz 2011: 2nd Year team take the title!

January 24, 2011

2nd vs 3rd Year Classics table quiz 2011Classics Quiz
On Wednesday morning, 19th January 2011,  Ms.Donohoe held a Classical Studies quiz in which the 2nd years competed against the 3rd years. As the third years arrived the nerves came upon us. We had three rounds, two on the Iliad and one on The Swaggering Soldier. As the scores of round one were put up the 2nd years were in the lead. After three tense rounds the overall score proved bad news for the 3rd years as the 2nd years took the title along with four beautiful Classical keyrings.

Tomi Reichental: Holocaust Survivor

December 21, 2010

Tomi Reichental visitOn the 8th of November, Tomi Reichental visited Stratford College and gave a speech which I think was very important and valuable to every single person who was there. It gave us a view of the worst of human nature and how it affects people but also how people like Tomi deal with their experiences and try to provide the next generation with knowledge on how to try and make sure that events like the Holocaust never happen again. The Holocaust, Tomi reminded us, is still relevant today with racial, ethnic and religious discrimination still a major issue in contemporary times.

Students listening to Tomi Reichental talkTomi Reichenthal gave a talk to the senior students, parents and teachers. It was a harrowing talk, giving an insight into the very harsh experience he endured as a child in Bergen Belsen. It was shocking to hear first hand what his life had been like and it was an amazing experience having him right there in the room with you. It makes it real and vivid, whereas if you simply read about the horrors that occurred in concentration camps, you wouldn’t get quite the same effect. It was a great experience for students, parents and teachers alike.

TY Trip to Leinster House

December 21, 2010

Cean Comhairle's bellOn Tuesday, 16th November our TY CSPE class visited Leinster House. When we arrived at Leinster House we waited in the security checkpoint and then were greeted by Deputy Ruairí Quinn’s assistant, Ian O’Mara, who directed us towards the Labour Party room.

An irritating bell rang out throughout the building which Ruairí Quinn explained to us, was to inform TDs to vote.  He told us about some of his earlier life before he was a politician and then how he became involved in politics. After answering a few questions he then brought us on a tour of Leinster House. While on the tour of Leinster House he showed us a number of pictures which had been taken when J.F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Tony Blair had visited the Dáil.

We were then brought around the rest of Leinster House and after pausing to answer a few more questions we were brought into the Public Gallery which looks down on the Dáil chamber.  After a short while, Ruairí Quinn left and we were left in the chamber on our own.  At the time, the Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey,  was being asked a number of questions by members of the Opposition which was very interesting.  At 4:30pm a number of members of Government and the Opposition entered, including Taoiseach, Brian Cowen and Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny.  We stayed for a short while after to hear some of the questions asked of the Taoiseach and answers he gave. The Leader of the Opposition, Enda Kenny, accused Brian Cowen of the obvious, that he the Taoiseach and his Government weren’t doing  their jobs.  We then left and got the bus home.
