Victors crowned in TY Mini Olympics

December 21, 2011

TY Mini Olympics, December 2011TY Mini Olympics, December 2011TY Mini Olympics, December 2011Consisting of sprints, javelin throws, wrestling and armour races – the Classical Mini Olympics was an enjoyable (and tiring) event that was enjoyed immensely by all.  (Click on thumbnails to open an enlarged version of image.)

As they were based on the Ancient Olympics which started in Greece in 776BC, to honour Zeus (King of the G-ds), we abided by Classical rules (with some adjustments) and only took part in events from the original games. We each gave ourselves Classical names and psyched ourselves up for each event by screaming our names and areas as loudly as possible. Ms Donohoe started each event by shouting “Apte!” (the Greek for “go”), and whoever came first was the winner (as Classical rules only award one winner – second place was deemed to be a disgrace).

On Tuesday 13th December, we all took part in the sprints and the javelin throws. The winners of the 200m sprints were Alice Murphy and Rory O’Neill; and the winners of the 100m sprints were Abi and Paul Ingoldsby. These winners all competed against one another, and the overall winners were Abi and Paul. Liam Hennessey won the javelin throw after beating Seán McGuinness in the final.

TY Mini Olympics, December 2011TY Mini Olympics, December 2011On Tuesday 20th December, we all took part in the wrestling matches in the hall. There were three different types – squat wrestling, push-up wrestling and arm tug wrestling. Rory O’Neill and Adina Kilroy won the final of the squat wrestling, Daniel Kelly and Alice Murphy the push-up wrestling and Toms  won the boys’ arm tug wrestling final, while Adina Kilroy and Sarah Cunningham were left in a tie.

TY Mini Olympics, December 2011TY Mini Olympics, December 2011Finally at lunch time on Wednesday 21st December, we all took part in the prestigious armour races – the most important event of all, where we had to run 200m whilst carrying heavy weights. Abi and Toms were crowned the winners – Abi being the first person to win both the sprints and the armour races, and Toms finishing by running into the fence and injuring himself after tripping over Daniel’s weights.

Overall it was great fun and I would definitely like to take part again.

2nd and 3rd Year Classical Students make quality models for Classics Arts competition

December 15, 2011

Well done to all 2nd and 3rd Years Classical Studies Students. Students participated in a Classical Art competition. They were asked to chose a creature or character from Classical Studies and create a model using toilet roll.

I was so impressed with the high standard of art work and the range of Classical characters chosen. It was very difficult to decide on a winner. Ms. O' Reilly and Ms. Mahon acted as judges and together we reached the difficult decision.

Congratulations  to first place winner Ciara  (3rd Year) and Sadhbh (3rd Year), Sveltlana and Andrew (2nd Year) who all came in second place. You will see the winning models below. Please visit the Classical Studies room to view all the other models, including a Cyclops, Minotaur, Spartan warrior, Roman soldier, Hydra, 3 Fates, Dido, Helen of Sparta, Parthenon and many more.

Well done to all of you who participated and thanks to Ms. O' Reilly and Ms. Mahon for judging.  (Click on thumbnails to open an enlarged version of image.)

I decided to do Triton the son of Neptune (G-d of the Sea) because we had just had a recent discussion about him. His bodClassical Studies Model Competition 2011y was made out of toilet roll. For his head I got some newspaper and rolled it into a ball. I covered the newspaper with a hanky. To make the hair I used a needle and thread and threaded the wool on.

Classical Studies Model Competition 2011Ever since 1st Year Classics, I've loved the myth about Persephone being abducted by Hades and forced to marry him in the underworld. When we were asked to make a model of any classical creature I immediately thought of Persephone. I based my idea on a corpse bride. The body is made of toilet roll and her head is made from clay. The material for the dress and veil was from the Art room.

Classical Studies Model Competition 2011I choose to do Athena because she is one of my favourite g-ddesses. I used a picture of her and stuck it to the toilet roll that we needed to use. I decided to leave it in black and white. To make her robe, I used some old tights and decorated it with some jewellery. I made her staff with a paintbrush and her shield with a sea shell. I decorated both with silver and gold marker. I put a picture of the Medusa on it instead of the owl that is usually shown on Athena's shield.

I chose to make a harpie because I thought it would be fun to make the wings and the feathers. I used two toilet rolls, a few pages of newspaper, and a sheet of Ms. Mahon's crepe paper. I cut a toilet roll in half for the wings and cut out little triangles from a newspaper for the feathers. I covered the harpie in orange crepe paper and used orange pipe cleaners for the arms and legs. For the claws and face, I used tin foil, which is really hard to stick on...I really enjoyed makingmy harpie!Classical Arts competition, December 2011

Green Schools: apply for Green Flag

December 14, 2011

Green Schools, December 2011Green Schools, December 2011Recently Green Schools has started back with the new school year and is starting strong with help from the current 3rd years who are basing their C.S.P.E action project around getting the school new bins. More recently, the Green Schools committee submitted an application for a Green-Schools Flag. The deadline was Thursday, 1st December. We have to wait to hear if our application is successful or not.

The committee meetings are held in the English room during lunch time on Wednesdays. The meetings are open to all years from 1st to 6th. Our school's Green Code is "Encourage to clean, always think Green". We are trying to stress this, this year by starting with a new poster campaign to help remind our fellow students.

Thanks to the third years we have a weekly bin count. This is kept on the display board outside the hall so the students can be aware of the school's current recycling-to-black-bin ratio.

Green Schools co-ordinator is Ms. Donohoe and she speaks to the staff on our behalf when or if problems arise.

Green Schools, December 2011Green Schools has also decided to start the year off well by giving the 1st year students a cross-curricular project as part of their Art education. They will not only be learning but they will help raise awareness throughout the school. (Click on thumbnails to open an enlarged version of image.)
