Ailbhe MacMahon - dress design finalist in Griffith College’s Reinvent Fashion competition

April 13, 2011

Reinvent Fashion ShowReinvent Fashion ShowWednesday the 30th of March was a day that held host to the annual "Reinvent" Fashion competition in Dublin’s Griffith College. An event highly anticipated by students all over the country, there were around one hundred entrants, each of whom had spent hours creating original and memorable pieces. However, the theme of the competition revolved around the reinvention of old clothes, and thus had to be manufactured from second hand garments.

I registered in the competition a day late, and the week before the event itself was nearly entirely consumed by sewing, and I would have been lost without the help of Ms. Mahon with my mood board. Sarah Corrigan (5th Year), who modelled the dress, was easily the prettiest model there and looked very professional on the catwalk, exhibiting the dress perfectly. There were some truly amazing designs that really caught our attention, but the judges had to narrow it down to six. Fortunately, they announced that Sarah and I were one of the lucky finalists, and she got the chance to walk again with the other winners. The prize is to have your design modelled by a professional in a publicised show, which will take place before the Summer holidays. We had a great day, and even got a free lunch, but the fact that we won certainly topped it off. (Click on thumbnails to open an enlarged version of photo. ))

Autumn Masks: Artwork by 1st Year students

February 10, 2011

Autumn Masks 1st YearIn Autumn all the 1st Year students collected different varieties of leaves. We used these leaves to make designs for autumn masks. First we drew the leaves and then coloured them in using the Autumn shades with oil pastels. We then took our drawings and used them as inspiration for a mask design. When we were happy with our designs we then made them out of clay. When the clay was dry we painted them in Autumn colours. In the end they all turned out brilliant! How to Make A Movie - the TY Irish and Art experience

January 26, 2011

TY Film Cailleacha UnderburyWe made a movie, 'Cailleacha Underbury', as a cross-curricular project in Irish and Art. It was a great experience. Starting from scratch, we looked at how movies should be made, wrote out scripts and acted out the movie. This was challenging, but everyone felt it helped with their Irish a lot.

Afterwards came the editing. It was a tedious procedure, but also enjoyable, interesting and definitely gave us a much better idea of what really goes into movie making. We had an opportunity to use iMovie Maker, and made great use of it, including dubbing, subtitles, cutting and multiplying scenes etc. It was an enjoyable and helpful project, and we all utilised our skills in both Irish and Art.  Click on thumbnail to open an enlarged version of photo. ))))
