Stratford Schools Network host a coffee morning and presentation by Yanky Fachler

May 10, 2012

Stratford Schools Parents Associations hosted a coffee morning with a presentation by Yanky Fachler, titled "Chutzpah: Unlocking the Maverick Mindset for Success", on Wednesday, 9th May. Refreshments were provided at 8.30am in the school hall. The presentation commenced at 9am and the event was over by 10.30am. (Click on thumbnail to open an enlarged version of image.)

Yanky Fachler runs High Octane Communication which helps clients improve their written, spoken and non-verbal communication skills. Yanky has the Chutzpah to describe himself as a Renaissance Man: corporate trainer, copywriter, author, speaking coach, newspaper columnist, keynote speaker, motivator, conference facilitator and ideas generator. His books include Fire in the Belly, and My Family Doesn't Understand Me, which challenges the myth of family support for entrepreneurs.

All were welcome, including parents of children attending Stratford schools, other friends of the schools including staff and past pupils, as well as members of the local community.

A morning of English Readings and Musical Interludes

May 10, 2012

This year I decided to celebrate the wonderfully imaginative and articulate work of our students by providing them with a forum to present them to the whole school. Each year group presented their best work. Unfortunately, their critical essays, which have been outstanding, have been excluded as their content wouldn't be suitable from an entertainment point of view. Watch the video highlights and listen to the podcasts to enjoy it all again.

Ms. Reynolds

Listen to the podcast of a 6th Year student playing Beethoven's 1st Movement of the Sonata in G Major, Opus 64.

The second podcast is of a 4th Year student singing Classical Vocals.

2nd Year Dáil Visit

May 1, 2012

Dail Eireann visitOn Wednesday, 25th of April, 2nd Years went to visit Dáil Éireann and the European Commission Offices, Dublin, under the auspices of Deputy Lucinda Creighton. We saw a debate going on in the Dáil, discussing the Fiscal Treaty and water charges.

We were then given a brief overview of the history of the Dáil, followed by a tour of Leinster House. We were also lucky enough to be able to watch a debate going on in the Seanad.

We then went to the European Commission Offices and were shown a presentation about Europe and the European Union (EU). We were given booklets containing information about the EU as well as other small items from Young Fine Gael, which Deputy Creighton was kind enough to give to us.  (Click on thumbnail to open an enlarged version of image.)

A few facts that we learned from the trip are:

  • Irish is an official language of the EU
  • Lord Edward Fitzgerald owned Leinster House which is now the Dáil
  • his wife had 19 children with him and 3 more children with the children’s tutor (22 altogether)
  • you can’t get an exact replica of the Proclamation of the Republic of Ireland
  • Cyprus is a member of the EU.

We enjoyed the visit very much and it was very educational.

TY Literary ‘One City One Book’ Walking Tour: Dubliners

April 30, 2012

Dubliners by James JoyceJoyce's 'Dubliners' is the chosen book for this year's One City One Book celebration. Each year, our Transition Year students read the chosen text and then participate in one of the many activities surrounding this event. This year we chose the walking tour. This was a wonderful tour, it took us around the old heart of Dublin: from Marlborough Street, through Parnell square and around to O'Connell street. Our guide, Pat Hayes, really captured the earthy and colloquial tone of the book through his lively dramatic readings and historical insights.

Ms. Reynolds

A unique, insightful experience, the 'Dubliners' walking tour was an enlightening event allowing us to perceive James Joyce's Dublin within our Dublin today. Our class, having read the book beforehand reminisced over the stories in the Dubliners as if they were spawns of nostalgia, however upsetting the tales of the ordinary human may be.

Although spirits were low due to an ardous period of walking, standing, raining and listening, all whilst we were surrounded by some of the more dreary, depressing, dull, uncharacterised buildings of our capital (not to mention hoards upon hoards of very loud tourists), I feel like I greatly benefitted from such an experience having gained both extreme appreciation and insight in the book, as well as the gratitude for it being written.
